If you suffer with bunions or hammertoes, you may need surgery. Drs. Jeff Hetman and Steven Moskowitz are highly experienced in treating both bunions and hammertoes and take advantage of the latest advances in surgical techniques to gently fix the problem and get you active again.
Bunions - This common condition is an enlargement of the bone and tissue around the joint of the big toe. The area may become red and swollen, making shoes and walking very uncomfortable. A bunion causes pain, swelling and skin irritation and can lead to arthritis. All together, Drs. Hetman and Moskowitz have performed over 5,000 bunion surgeries, so you know your feet will be in good hands.
Hammertoes - This "buckling" of the toe(s) is caused by an imbalance in the tendons or joints. As a hani nertoe becomes more rigid over time, corns and calluses may form, making it difficult to wear shoes. Drs. I Ietman and Moskowitz's nonsurgical care may include careful trimming and special protective devices. Difficult cases may require surgical treatment.
Heel pain is extremely common. Drs. Jeff Hetman and Steven Moskowitz are wellversed in heel pain and have a variety of methods of treating this painful condition. The best way to be sure your heel pain doesn't become a chronic condition and lead to more problems is to visit us for a thorough evaluation. These are some common conditions that cause heel pain:
Plantar fasciitis - This type of heel pain is caused by inflamed fascia, the tissue bands that connect the heel to the toe at the bottom of the foot. Nonsurgical care includes custom orthotics, injection therapy, night splints, removable walking casts and physical therapy. Surgery is always our last resort when treating plantar fasciitis.
Heel spurs - When plantar fasciitis goes untreated, calcium deposits known as "heel spurs" can form on the heel bone. Our foot and ankle specialists offer surgical and nonsurgical treatment, including computer-enhanced orthotics, injection therapy, physical therapy and medication, to relieve pain caused by heel spurs.
Achilles tendonitis -This is an inflammation of the large tendon that connects your calf muscle to your heel. If Achilles tendonitis is diagnosed, anti-inflammatory medicine may be prescribed and/or heel lifts may be used. In particularly unresponsive cases, a walking cast may be helpful. Surgery is not usually necessary to treat Achilles tendonitis.
Bursitis - Runners, athletes and others who spend a significant amount of time on their feet may develop bursitis where the Achilles tendon inserts into the heel bone. A thorough exam will help our foot and ankle specialists be sure you haven't also developed a heel spur. If a change of shoes and the use of orthotics are not successful in relieving the pain, cortisone injections may be tried. Surgery is a last resort and is seldom necessary to treat bursitis.
Drs. Jeff Hetman and Steven Moskowitz are board-certified podiatrists who will use their wealth of experience and knowledge to recommend the care that's best for you. When surgery is your best option, you can rest assured that Drs. Hetman and Moskowitz will utilize the best orthopedic, plastic surgery techniques to enhance healing and decrease postoperative time. Whenever possible, they use a cosmetic approach to reduce scarring.
Drs. Hetman and Moskowitz use these state-of-the-art techniques not only because they reduce pain and scarring but also because they are dramatically easier to undergo when compared with open surgery. Many patients are able to go to work and continue their activities in just a few days after undergoing a minimally invasive procedure. Here are just a few of the conditions that Drs. Hetman and Moskowitz can treat with advanced surgical techniques.
Neuromas - A neuroma is nerve swelling that results from either low-grade trauma or constant compression. This swollen nerve may burn or tingle or cramp the toes. Symp¬toms are typically worst after walking or standing. Treatment options vary depending upon the severity of the trauma.
Arch problems - Most people have a gap or "arch" between in the inner side of the foot and the ground when they are standing. Patients with severe high-arched feet may experience calf pain, knee pain and hip pain. Flatfeet is another condition in which the foot doesn't have a normal arch. Children with flatfeet, and those adults who acquire flatfeet, are usually able to run and walk without a lot of problems. On the other hand, some patients suffering from flatfeet have significant pain and arc very limited in their activities. Whatever your arch-related problem, Drs. Hetman and Moskowitz offer advanced surgery to correct it and keep you on your feet.
Soft-tissue problems - Drs. Hetman's and Moskowitz's comprehensive foot and ankle care includes lacerations, ligament strains, muscle strains and tendon problems, including ruptured tendons. The average age of patients with ruptured tendons is 30 to 40 years with a male-to-female ratio of nearly 20:1.
Fractures/bone injuries - Drs. Hetman and Moskowitz offer up-to-date care for both fractures and bone injuries. One of the most common conditions we see is a fractured ankle. An under treated ankle fracture can lead to a lifetime of chronic pain and limited mobility and acute pain, as well.
Flatfeet - If your foot's arch loses its strength, the foot's framework begins to collapse, causing the foot to flatten. We may prescribe special custom orthotic shoe inserts, physical therapy and/or medication to relieve pain and inflammation. Surgery may be considered your best option for effective pain relief in severe flatfeet cases.
Sports Injury Care - When you injure your foot or ankle, it can sideline you for long periods of time if you don't get proper treatment. Drs. Hetman and Moskowitz have the training and experience to keep you active whether you are a hardtraining competitive athlete or a weekend warrior. Some of the sports injuries they treat include:
• Fractures • Tendonitis • Achilles tendon injuries
• Ankle sprains • Toe injuries, including turf toe
Custom Orthotics - Our computer-enhanced custom orthotics are prescription-quality shoe inserts that help control abnormal foot motion, provide stability and correct injury-causing imbalances. They are proven to help with heel and arch pain, bunions, shin splints and other foot-related problems. Custom orthotics are a must for most athletes and are also helpful for some of the more common foot problems many of us experience from time to time.
